Thing is with everything he has and will do this is a perfect storm for economic disaster for many people. Let's just see what happens with The Supreme Court and their ruling on his tariffs. If they rule against him they just may save him politically

We have yet to see the full effects of his tariffs as they were and he has just imposed an extra batch to include 130% on China which will go into effect as well. Granted China wasn't exporting rare earth minerals, but he after all started this ill-advised trade war which never works that unless you count the Great Depression as a success. All based on an extremely stupid trade deficit policy.

Trump really is his own worst enemy. Just look at the six bankruptcies he has had not to mention the numerous failed business deals on top of that to include singles handily killing the USFL.

And of course the contractors he stiffed and dared them to sue him when he knew they couldn't afford to, the lawyers he didn't pay, and the banks he didn't repay. Not too mention the little old ladies and old men he scammed.

Perfect resume to be put in charge of what once was the greatest economy on earth.

It’s cold, but this might be a good thing: force people to realize that “oh wait, maybe the government actually does really important stuff and we shouldn’t burn it to the ground just because Fox News say we should.”

Hells, we all know that air traffic controllers and the Social Security Administration could end the shutdown easily by simply going in total furlough and stopping their work. The country would grind to a *total* halt if ATC’s stopped working and the SSA stopped paying out.

People want to act like the government is just a bunch of lazy do-nothings that they don’t need? Cut those essential services off and watch how quickly people start begging for their beloved federal services, and how quickly they turn on Republicans.

I feel this. I made crap when I was in government service years ago, but had no cost of living. I switched to a different department and made much more, but then had to pay living expenses. I went through multiple shutdowns, and had no choice but to continue working in either case, and it was difficult. So many want to look at everything as black and white when its rarely the case. If more people were actually open minded and truly sympathetic, especially the politicians who claim to be, this wouldn't be such a common thing.

It frustrates me that Democrats want to extend “temporary” programs enacted during COVID and keep paying for healthcare reimbursements for hospitals that provide healthcare for illegal immigrants, and that they are willing to shutdown the government to make their point.

I know you don’t want to hear it, but I would recommend applying for unemployment tonight. You say you live in a high cost area so I’m assuming you live in either DC or one of the surrounding MD/VA cities. 

In DC the max unemployment per week is around $444. It’s not a lot but it could be the difference between missing payments that aren’t going to be forgiven.

I know of a few feds that don’t want to apply because they know they have to pay it back when funding is approved but getting a few hundred bucks a week they have to repay is better than getting nothing at all. I told the ones that say they don’t need the money to throw it in a savings account until the shutdown is over before paying it back.

Air traffic controllers. They are required to come in to work even though they aren't getting paid. They will be back-paid (historically, but who knows with this administration). They're already over worked. They'll start calling in sick. If they are or are not doesn't matter. This will cause delays. Delays cascade and compound. Pretty quick every flight is delayed and people start asking why. This is what happened last major shutdown with Trump as President. 


There are two major factors here that will make this worse though: Trump has been gutting the FAA, and air traffic controllers are ALREADY on a major strain. And the entire economy is under unusual strain. So we could just see a fucking major air accident before we see this breaking point.

There's really no telling these days.

On one hand, the last one ended because TSA got the '[Blue Flu](https://www.cnn.com/2019/01/05/opinions/tsa-blue-flu-economic-injustice-granderson)' aka they called out sick, en masse, and caused so many headaches for politicians suddenly they saw eye-to-eye. I've seen a separate post that by Monday, they may start doing similar again. 

OTOH, Trump v2 has said they are wanting to fire people. And during COVID, air traffic went to ATC zero in quite a few places, so the administration may say screw it, if you don't go to work you're fired, even if you're sick. And not enough people to keep certain towers open? Screw it, ATC zero it and let the airlines work it out. 

There's no real telling what they are going to do. I suspect it'll be over soon(ish), quite likely before 2026, but... who knows.

It will end in some sort of deal where Democrats will be able to say they "saved" healthcare but it won't actually be anything meaningful, and then Trump will try to take credit for it. His supporters will believe him, everyone else won't. Effectively we'll be right back where we started.

I think flight delays will start after 2-3 weeks.  As we get closer to Thanksgiving, there will be more pressure. So probably 2-3 weeks on short end, no longer than 6 weeks.  

I’m probably of the minority opinion, but I don’t think the dems have much reason to cave.  Polling seems to be in their favor and it’ll be a huge win if they can get the healthcare concessions.

The longest was 34 days during trumps first term (Dec 18 through Jan 19). I have a sneaking suspicion this will be a lot longer. Because when it does officially reopen, jobs, unemployment, and CPI inflation data gets calculated and released.
